Step 1. Measure the wifi performance, I got it from 40Mbits/sec to 70Mbits/sec :)

on the router side install and run iperf

sudo opkg install iperf

iperf -s

on the laptop/any wireless distro install iperf and run it

sudo apt install iperf

iperf -c 192.168.1.1 -t60 -i1

after a while you will get the results.

Editing the /etc/config/wireless file, settings should look like this

config wifi-device 'radio0'
    option type 'mac80211'
    option channel '11'
    option hwmode '11g'
    option path 'platform/10180000.wmac'
    option htmode 'HT40'
    option country '00'
    option legacy_rates '1'


The following options will be enabled (all disabled by default):   

bursting: Enables frame bursting    

ff: Enables fast frames    

compression: Enables hardware compression

turbo: Enables turbo mode

First make a copy of the /etc/config/wireless

sudo cp /etc/config/wireless /etc/config/wireless.bak

and open to edit the /etc/config/wireless

add the following lines to the config wifi device 'radioX', can be radio0 or radio1

option bursting 1

option ff 1

option compression 1

option turbo 1

Now a reboot or /etc/init.d/network restart is needed and test again the wifi performance as showed in the first step.

 

The image is a snapshot. There is no 5GHz support.

Luci (web interface), openvpn and nano editor will be installed just in case.

Download from Firmware LEDE Upgrade URL the .bin file and rename it as factory.bin otherwise installation will fail.

apt install tftp

Turn off wireless if there is one and assign this address to the interface

ifconfig enp3s0 down

ifconfig enp3s0 up 192.168.1.10

Disconnect routers wan and connect computer eth with routers lan port. Now on the router remove the plug from the back and hold wps button while pluging in power, keep pressing wps for 3-4 untill power is blinking.

Let it start again and take out power again.

With a toothpick keep pressing reset button for 4-5" while powering up, take out the t/pick , now at the terminal navigate to where factory.bin file is and connect to the router via tftp

put factory.bin

and let it reboot, it will take 2-3 minutes.

Connect routers wan to your wall plug.

Now connect to the openwrt/lede with (passwd is not set yet)

and install luci,nano and openvpn packages

opkg update

opkg install nano

opkg install luci

opkg install -force-depends openvpn-openssl luci-app-openvpn

That was it, now visit 192.168.1.1 and enjoy the web gui. Further settings can be done via the web face and more themes are available to download and install but this is out of the scope of this posting.

Don't forget to set a passwd for the root user, can be done via ssh or via web gui.
